Boys in the first through fifth grade, and their families, who may be interested in Cub Scouting, should visit the About Pack 451 page for detailed information. Information about our dens and their meeting days appears below. Boys do not have to go to any particular school or live in any particular area to join Cub Scouts with Pack 451. The choice of a Cub Scout Pack is usually a matter of where friends are joining and/or the convenience of the meeting location. If the location of Pack 451 is not convenient for you, check out other Cub Scout packs in Durham (see below).
Cub Scouting is for boys in first through fifth grade. For information about girls in Scouting, click here.
Pack 451 usually hosts formal Join Cub Scouting Information Nights twice a year. This year we held one on May 18, two more on August 24 and August 25, and final one on October 5. Even though we have these scheduled Join Scouting Information Nights, a boy who is in the first through fifth grade can join Cub Scouting with Cub Scout Pack 451 anytime. Pack 451 now has 83 boys officially registered in grades one through five among nine dens (see below).
A den is a group of boys in a particular grade, led by one or more adult den leader volunteers. The leaders and parents of the den decide when and where the den meets. If there is space in a den, or if a new den forms with a den leader, then Pack 451 will accept any eligible boy for membership. First-grade Tiger Cub dens are the beginning level of Cub Scouting, which means that they have to be formed brand new either at the end of the kindergarten school year or at the beginning of the first grade school year. .
Our Location and Contact Information: Cub Scout Pack 451 of Durham, North Carolina is chartered by Westminster Presbyterian Church as part of its scouting outreach program. JOINING BOY SCOUTS (OLDER BOYS): Boy Scouting (as opposed to Cub Scouting) is for older boys, those who are at least 11 years old, or who have completed the 5th grade, or who have earned the Arrow of Light in Cub Scouting and are at least 10 years old. For more information on Boy Scouting, visit the Troop 451 Website.
JOINING GIRL SCOUTS: Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting are exclusively for boys. Girls interested in Scouting can join the Girl Scouts. Girl Scout Troop 1806, for girls in grades 1-6 (Daisy-Brownie-Junior-Cadette), partners with Pack 451 on several activities. For more information on Girl Scouting, visit the Troop 1806 website or the North Carolina Coastal Pines Girl Scout Council website.
Finding a Different Cub Scout Pack: If Cub Scouting sounds great, but the location of Pack 451 is not convenient for you, consider finding another Cub Scout pack in Durham. You can find other Durham area Cub Scout packs by visiting the Durham District Scouting Website. There you can find a Cub Scout pack either in a List of Durham Cub Scout Packs format, or by using the interactive mapping tool, where you enter your address and a map comes up with packs that are near the address. NEW: National BSA now has a ‘Be A Scout” website with a lot of good information about Cub Scouting, and a locator tool that works very similar to our district’s interactive mapping system. You can check out Be A Scout here.
