JOINING CUB SCOUTS: Cub Scouting is for boys currently in Kindergarten through 4th grade (rising 1st grade through rising 5th grade). Boys do not have to go to any particular school or live in any particular area to join Cub Scouts with Pack 451. The choice of a Cub Scout Pack is usually a matter of where friends are joining and/or the convenience of the meeting location. If the location of Pack 451 is not convenient for you, check out other Cub Scout packs in Durham (see below).
Pack 451 hosted a well-attended Join Cub Scouting Information Night on May 13, 2008. Pack 451 will host two more Join Cub Scouting events this year, on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 and on Thursday, August 28, 2008. More details will be posted on those events soon.
Although we have these special Join Cub Scouting Information Nights, a boy who is in the 1st through 5th grade (or, in the spring, rising to 1st through 5th grade) can join Cub Scouting with Cub Scout Pack 451 at any time. Right now, Pack 451 has 50 boys in grades one through five, participating in six dens (a den is a group of boys in a particular grade, led by an one or more adult den leader volunteers). As a result of our May 13 Join Scouting Night, we have formed a new Tiger Cub Den 6 for boys who will be first-graders in the fall, and we hope to form a new Webelos Den 2 for boys who will be fourth-graders in the fall. First-grade Tiger Cub dens are the beginning level of Cub Scouting, which means that they have to be formed brand new either from kindergarten-age boys in the springtime as they rise into 1st grade, or at the beginning of the 1st grade school year. Details about Cub Scout Pack 451 and how to join us can be found on our About Pack 451 Page.
JOINING BOY SCOUTS: Boy Scouting is for older boys, those who have completed the 5th grade through high school. For more information on Boy Scouting, visit the Troop 451 Website.
JOINING GIRL SCOUTS: Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting are exclusively for boys. However, for our May 13 Join Scouting event, we “joined forces” with Girl Scouting to present Scouting opportunities for both boys and girls. That worked really well for both organizations, and we hope to do it again in the fall. Girl Scouting has membership levels for girls from 5 through 17 years old. For more information on Girl Scouting, visit the North Carolina Coastal Pines Girl Scout Council website.
Finding a Different Cub Scout Pack: If Cub Scouting sounds great, but the location of Pack 451 is not convenient for you, consider finding another Cub Scout pack in Durham. You can find other Durham area Cub Scout packs by visiting the Durham District Scouting Website. There you can find a Cub Scout pack either in a List of Durham Cub Scout Packs format, or by using the interactive mapping tool, where you enter your address and a map comes up with packs that are near the address.
